Lives Transformed through the grace of jesus christ

Who is Jesus

At NorthLight Anglican Church we follow the Lord Jesus Christ. What we believe about Jesus is actually contained in the two words 'Jesus' and 'Christ'

1. Jesus was born to save us from our sins.
In the Hebrew language the word Jesus (Joshua) means 'God saves' and this is expressly why Jesus was given that name - "Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you" Luke 2:11. So first is that Jesus was born to save us from our sins, to bring forgiveness for them so that we might be reconciled to God and enjoy him forever.

2. Jesus is the King and ruler of our world
The word 'Christ' means 'anointed one'. Perhaps this doesn't help much until you think of the coronation ceremony of the kings and queens of England who assume their role as monarch through a ceremony where they are anointed with oil. The anointing symbolises the bestowal of power and authority of the monarch. They got this from the Bible where the kings of Israel were similarly anointed. So the Christ is the anointed one, which therefore means he is the King. So the second thing we believe about Jesus is that he is the King and ruler of the world.

So Jesus is our Saviour and King. He brings us into a relationship with God through the forgiveness of sins he procured for us on the cross and he rules our lives for our good and for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Each week we explore what this means and looks like for our lives in our Bible reading and message.

WHat is church

Church' has so many meanings and connotations for people and what we imagine it to be can vary depending upon our background, culture and history. At its heart the church is the gathering of God's people around Christ and his Word. So when we meet in our various services and locations we meet together as believers in Jesus Christ who gather to hear Jesus speak to us through his word - the Bible. This is more important to us than maintaining traditions or rituals though we will do things that churches have done throughout the centuries: for example we will read the Bible together; pray to God in response and for our needs; hear the Word of God taught and applied and sing his praises.

'We invite you not simply to attend but to join the community of believers - the two things are chalk and cheese.
